Abstract

Filtration apparatus comprises a filtration member having a screw-threaded outlet stem depending from it, the stem being engaged in a threaded aperture in the base of a thermostatically-controlled heating bath which surrounds at least part of the filtration member. A Buchner flask or the like having a pressure-tight stopper may engage the lower end of the stem in a pressure tight manner. Preferably the filtration member consists of a funnel with a perforate plate on which a filter paper is placed. Rates of filtration of oil through different, or differently-prepared, bleaching earths may be compared by mixing oil and earth, heating the mixture, pouring it into the filter member and timing the filtration in each case. Degrees of retention of oil by earth may also be compared. Bleaching efficiencies may be compared by comparing colours of filtrates. Several filter members may be associated with one heating bath. The bleaching earth cake may be removed bodily by placing on it a filter paper, applying to it the perforated end of a hollow drum, evacuating the drum, and removing the drum with the adhering cake.
