Abstract
927,359. Servicing reactors. BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd. Dec. 14, 1960 [Sept. 16, 1959], No. 31545/59. Class 39 (4). A reactor servicing machine comprises a shielded pressure vessel 1 mounted on a base 2 having wheels 3 whereby it may be driven on rails 4 and aligned with a selected standpipe 6 in the charge face 5. A pipe 12 extends from the bottom of the vessel 1 and carries a pipe 16, spherical surfaces 18, 19 on a flange at the upper end of the pipe 16 being received by similarly shaped surfaces of a socket secured to the pipe 12 to provide a universal mounting 17. A sealing ring 20 ensures fluid pressure tightness. A sleeve 21 slidable on the pipe 16 has its upper end formed as a piston 24 with seals 32, 33, the piston moving in the annular space between the pipe 16 and a cylinder 25 attached to the pipe by a flange joint 26. The lower end of the space is closed by an end cap 27 fixed to the cylinder 25 whereby by admitting fluid to the space above or below the piston 24 through a pipe connection 30 or 31 the sleeve 21 may be extended or retracted. When it is extended, as shown, its spherically shaped lower end surface 22 makes a pressure tight connection with a conical surface 23 on the standpipe 6. When the sleeve 21 is retracted a flange 39 thereon engages a flange 38 on a shielding ring 36 to lift the ring and provide a clearance 35 between the shielding and the charge face 5 to enable the machine to be moved. The machine may serve for charging a reactor with fuel elements but, as shown, it serves for the removal of control rods and standpipe plug and the insertion of a shoot, the fuel elements being subsequently transferred by another machine. A magazine 9 within the pressure vessel 1 has a number of chambers 11 which may be brought in turn into alignment with the pipe 12 by an indexing mechanism 10, the chambers serving to accommodate the equipment to be transferred, the transfer being effected by a grab 14 controlled by a winch 15.
