A ventilator comprises an elongated tubular housing arranged in a slot, e.g. in a window frame or a wall, and including at least one unit having two air openings located on opposite sides of the housing and spaced from each other longitudinally with one or more fans between them, the drive means for the fan-shaft being disposed outside the portion containing the air openings. As shown in Fig. 1, a window frame 3 has air slots at top and bottom which are covered by louvres or gratings 6 and 5 which may include sliding closure members. The ventilator is fitted in the top slot and comprises a housing 10, Fig. 5, divided by a central partition 18, Fig. 2, into two sections, each containing a fan 11 and air openings 14, 15, the fans being driven by motors 13. The air flow may be from inside to outside as indicated by arrows in Fig. 2, or, by reversing the fans, from outside to inside. In another embodiment, the ventilator is built up from identical unit sections 31, each comprising a fan assembly 39, Fig. 9, and air openings 34, 35. A common driving unit 41 including motor 43, is connected at one end, and a compensating unit 51 having a length sufficient to fill up the ventilating slot may be connected at the other end. The units comprise tubes closed by end discs such as 37, Fig. 13, and connected by rings 53. The fan-drive shaft comprises sections 38 having reduced ends 58, 59 which are coupled by an elastic sleeve 57 extending between U-shaped rings 60. A modified unit, Figs. 17 and 19, comprises a tube section 32 elastically mounted within a rectangular housing 71 having detachable side walls which may comprise louvres 74 or wire mesh. The housing has complementary sleeve portions 80, 81 for connection to adjacent units, and the tube has connections similar to those of Fig. 13. The air openings 34 may be closed by sliding covers 101 moved in unison by a rod 105, Figs. 17 and 22, connected to the motor switch 110. Fig. 25 shows a possible arrangement of units 71 in a room. The ventilator may be arranged so that some of the units blow air from outside to inside and others from inside to outside, or may be positioned at the level of the bottom of a radiator so that the fresh air is heated as it enters a room.
