Abstract
927,271. Turbidometers. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Sept. 16, 1959 [Sept. 16, 1958], No. 29649/58. Class 97 (3). A grit sampling apparatus comprises a conduit 1 terminating at one end in a sampling nozzle 2 which is inserted through a hole 41, in the chimney or duct 40, a steam or compressed air ejector 3, or an electrically driven gas extractor pump, at the other end of conduit 1 so that gas can be drawn into the conduit 1 through the nozzle 2, there being arranged serially along the conduit 1, grit extracting means, such as an axial type separating cyclone 4 with collecting hopper 5 and a glass wool filter 6, a valve 17 for adjusting the quantity of gas flowing through the conduit, a device such as a gauge 28 measuring the pressure across an orifice 26 for indicating the quantity of gas flowing through the conduit 1, a pressure control valve 35 to adjust the static pressure of the gas, as detected by a gauge 27, and heaters 19 to vary the temperature of the gas. Initially the portion of conduit 1 shown in Fig. 1, is disconnected from that shown in Fig. 2. and filter 6 inserted through opening 31, layer closed by cover 32, into an enlargement 30. Air is now passed through a filter, not shown, along the conduit 1, being heated by the electrical heaters 19 so that free moisture, emulsions and the like present in filter 6 are removed. The filter 6 is cooled in a desiccator and weighed. The two parts of conduit 1 are now connected by a substantial flexible tubing and ejector 3 started so that gas is drawn through the conduit 1, the heaters 19 being so adjusted that the gas temperature, as indicated at 29, is the same as that in the chimney 40 and the valves 17, 35 so arranged that the readings taken on pressure gauges 27, 28 bear a definite relationship to conditions prevailing in the chimney. The dry weight of grit deposited in hopper 5 and filter 6 is then measured after a definite time of operation.
