Abstract
927,231. Fuel briquettes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Sept. 2, 1959 [June 4, 1958; Aug. 21, 1959], Nos. 17821/58 and 28626/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 91 Fuel briquettes comprising carbonaceous materials such as coal or coke and a binder such as pitch are treated to reduce the smoke emitted upon eventual combustion by heating a bed of the briquettes for a time of less than two hours while passing through the bed a stream of an oxygen-containing gas such as air, to a temperature between 150‹ and 350‹C. and above the temperature at which rapid oxidation occurs but below that at which the briquettes will burn, the thus treated briquettes being then quenched with water with or without an intermediate cooling step in which the briquettes are cooled in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The preferred time of the treatment is between 40 and 100 minutes and the depth of the bed of briquettes between 2 feet and 3 feet 6 inches. The temperature variation through a vertical cross-section of the bed preferably does not exceed 10‹C. Apparatus for carrying out the treatment comprises a horizontal tunnel furnace through which a bed of briquettes is moved on an endless conveyer through which a stream of air is drawn. Specification 807,433 is referred to.
