Abstract

927,228. Inductive potentiometers. E. M. LANGHAM, and COLVERN Ltd. June 15, 1961 [June 21, 1960], No. 21753/60. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A potentiometer in which voltage steps in the output are reduced by using a multiple take-off member, having the pitch of the takeoff points differing from that of the turns or tappings of the inductive or resistive winding with which they co-operate (either conductively or capacitatively) to give a vernier effect, has circulating currents between the take-off points inhibited by applying equal voltages between adjacent take-off points such that the voltage between the outer take-off points is substantially equal in magnitude and phase to the voltage between the turns or tappings of the winding which they span. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, rod 21 is a former of high magnetic permeability carrying a sectionalized winding 22, the winding being of a good conductor. The identical sections of winding 22 are connected as shown in Fig. 4 to the secondary 235 of transformer 23. The sleeve 25 carrying coaxial windings 27 and 18 surrounds windings 22, spanning more than one section. The pitch of winding 28 is different from (preferably smaller than) that of winding 22, and resistors 30, 31 joining the ends of winding 28 are such that the voltage per unit length is the same for windings 22 and 28. Resistive contact, represented by resistances 35, is made between windings 22 and 28, as the latter slides on the former. An input voltage VI is applied to the primary 23P of transformer 23, of which another winding 23T is connected to winding 27 which is inductively coupled to winding 28. The output VO is taken between the junction of resistors 30 and 31 and the free end of winding 23S. In a modification, resistances 35 are replaced by capacitive coupling, by interposing a dielectric between windings 22 and 28, or constructing these of anodized aluminium. In another embodiment, using the circuit of Fig. 5, capacitive couplings used, the capacitor elements being strips embedded in dielectric plates, at right angles to the direction of relative motion.
