Abstract
926,711. Laminates. F. F. JARAY. Aug. 12, 1959 [May 15, 1958; Sept. 20, 1958], Nos. 15582/58 and 30125/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXVIII] The or each wall of a hollow article comprises a reinforcing layer formed from synthetic resinous material reinforced by at least one inner series of parallel, tensioned, fibrous strands and by at least one second series of parallel, tensioned, fibrous strands superimposed on the inner series, the strands of the second series lying at an angle to those of the inner series, and a lining layer of a synthetic resinous material chemically different from the synthetic resinous material reinforced by the inner series of strands. More than two reinforced layers may be employed. The lining layer may also be reinforced or may be of foamed synthetic resinous material, and may lie between the two layers reinforced by tensioned fibrous strands. The outer surface of the reinforcing layers may be sealed with a layer of reinforced or unreinforced synthetic resinous material. The articles may be tanks or pipes for liquids or pipes for use as lamp-posts or telegraph poles, and may be formed by winding on a mandrel, which may be expansible. The fibrous material may be glass fibre. If the first synthetic resinous material is a polyester resin, the second may be a furfural resin, e.g. a phenol-furfural resin, an epoxy resin, a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, such as P.V.C., or cashew-nut resin. Alternatively, the lining layer may be first formed of a material such as P.V.C. or polyethylene, and the other layers wound on to it. A foamed lining layer, if used, may be of polyurethane foam or expanded P.V.C. In Example 3 the lining layer is of phenol-furfural resin reinforced with a mat of heat-sealed polyester fibre strands. In Example 4 a lining layer of foamed polyurethane resin lies between helically wound layers of glass fibre impregnated with epoxy resin. According to the first Provisional Specification, the lining may be of natural or synthetic rubber. According to the second Provisional Specification, two thin-walled pipes may be made comprising layers of fibre-reinforced synthetic resin, arranged coaxially and the space between them filled with material for foaming in situ. Specifications 810,473, 838,219 and 842,754 are referred to.
