Abstract
926,054. Electric igniters. R. W. BEATTIE. Jan. 22, 1960, No. 2468/60. Class 75 (3). An electric igniter comprises a housing 10 containing an insulated element 11 carrying an electric heating coil 30 adapted to be projected outwardly of the housing against spring return means to facilitate the ignition of a smoker's pipe. The heating coil is formed by an involute of high-resistance metal of tape form seated on edge. The spring return means conducts electricity from the housing to one end of the heating coil 30 when the igniter is engaged in a socket mounted on the dashboard of a car; the other end of the heating coil engages a central contact in the socket. The spring return means may comprise coil springs 20 extending from a ring 29 on the igniter to inward lugs 18 on the housing 10, or a single helical spring, Fig. 6 (not shown), surrounding the insulating element 11 and having its upper end seated on an annular shoulder on the inside of the housing 10, or the heating coil itself may be resilient and have its outer end connected to the housing 10 and its inner end connected to a sliding actuating stem extending through a filling of insulating material within the housing 10 and adapted to push the inner end of the heater coil outwardly from the plane of the coil, Fig. 8 (not shown). The insulating element 11 has a collar 23 which engages an inward flange 16 on the housing 10 and the lugs 18 to determine the innermost position and the outermost position of the heating coil 30. In the construction in which the heating coil itself is the spring return means the outer end of the actuating stem engages the insulating filling to determine the outermost position of the heating coil and a spring may be mounted between the outer end of the actuating stem and the insulating filling. The housing comprises two sections 12, 13 joined together in a press fit. The upper section has a bead 15 for engaging clips on the socket on the dashboard. The lower section may have its free end flanged or inclined inwardly. The collar 23 may have notches for the passage of the lugs 18 during assembly.
