Abstract

Polymers of olefins which contain silicon atoms in the polymer chain are produced by polymerizing an olefin under an otherwise conventional high or low pressure process, in the presence of a compound containing one or more Si-Si linkages per molecule but not containing any unsaturated polymerizable group and optionally containing halogen or organic radicals. Examples of said Si-Si compounds are Si10Cl18, Si10Cl20H2 Si2H6, Si3H8, Si2Cl6, Si2Br6, [SiBr]x, [SiBr2]x, [SiH2]x, [Si(OC2H5)2]x, [Si(OCH3)2]x, [Si(CH3)2]6, [-Si(C2H5)Cl-]x, (CH3)3Si-Si(CH3)3, Si#jBr2-Si#jBr2, [-Si(CH3)2-]x, [-Si(C2H5)2-]x and Si(CH3)H2-Si(CH3)2H, wherein x is an integer greater than 2. Ethylene, propylene and butene are the specified olefins and in the examples the following catalysts are used: (1) TiCl3+ Et2AlCl in methyl trichlorsilane, (2) AlCl3 in cyclohexane, (3) AlBr3 in cyclohexane, (4) azodiisobutyronitrile in heptane, and (5) ethylaluminium sesquichloride in octane. The products may be oils, waxes or thermoplastic solids.
