In a portable telephone instrument in which V.F. signals fed to the transmitter or receiver act as the ringing signal, a resonant cavity is formed between the transmitter or receiver and the associated part of the instrument casing and another resonant circuit is formed by arranging that the volume enclosed by a cover for the instrument is matched to a slot formed between the cover and the casing. The instrument also contains means (unspecified) for converting normal ringing current into a V.F. signal. The overall amplification using these resonant circuits is stated to be 17 db. In Fig. 1, the resonant cavity is shown at 3, sound outlet from the cavity being through gaps 21 between spacing pillars 22 (only two shown). A hook switch arm 6 passing through watertight bellows 10 serves to restrain the handset on its stand. The cover 11 (Fig. 2) may be spaced from the casing 12 so as to provide a resonating slot 14 or by hooking button 20 through a second higher hole in metal plate 17, a watertight joint between cover and casing can be made (Fig. 3, not shown).
