Abstract
A process for the manufacture of substituted benzophenones having in one benzene nucleus an alkyl group in at least one ortho position and which may also contain further alkyl groups in the same nucleus comprises condensing a benzene carboxylic acid having at least one alkyl group in an ortho position with respect to the carboxyl group and which may also contain further alkyl groups with benzene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Examples describe the condensation of 2-methyl-, ethyl and isopropyl and 2,4-, 2,5- and 2,6-dimethyl-benzoic acid with benzene in the presence of aluminium trichloride to give the corresponding benzophenones.
