Abstract

Cyanocobalamin, or a concentrate containing a major proportion of cyanocobalamin is produced by a direct fermentation process in which cobaltous cyanide is added to the nutrient medium and the concentration of cobaltous and cyanide ions is kept constant throughout the fermentation. Preferably sterile cyanide is added to the medium after it has been sterilized to avoid supersaturation. In example Propionibacterium is grown on a medium containing cornsteep, yeast autolysate, casein hydrolysate and glucose and from 20 to 100 p.p.m. of cobaltous cyanide at 30 DEG . using moderate agitation. After fermentation for up to 84 hours the mass was centrifuged, washed and dried by atomization. The product consists almost wholly of cyanocobalamin with a very small proportion of hydroxy cobalamin. Specifications 695,273 and 699,369 are referred to.ALSO:A powder containing 700 mg./kg. of cyanocobalamin and less than 50 mg./kg. of hydroxycobalamin is a growth promoting feed for cattle. The powder may be made by a direct fermentation process for cyanocobalamin in which cobaltous cyanide has been added to the nutrient medium (see Group IV (b)).
