925,244. Temperature indicators. G. A. B. RUHNE. April 26, 1961 [April 26, 1960], No. 15116/61. Class 97 (3). A defrosting indicator comprises a wholly or partly transparent envelope containing a waterin-oil or oil-in-water emulsion which separates on freezing and remains separated on subsequent defrosting, and a dye placed in contact with, or in the immediate proximity to, the emulsion, the dye being water-soluble, e.g. potassium permanganate or methylene blue when the emulsion is of the water-in-oil type or an oil-soluble dye when the emulsion is of the oil-in-water type, to produce a conspicuous change in colour when the frozen indicator becomes defrosted. The oil of the emulsion is liquid at temperatures about or immediately below the indication temperature. The dye may be in powder or tablet form and in the latter case may be coated with sugar or other water-soluble substance to increase the storage life of the indicator.
