Abstract

A process for making high molecular weight polyamides resistant to degradation by heat comprises incorporating in said polyamides or in the starting materials from which they are made or in the partially polymerized polyamides, elementary copper or an oxide or hydroxide thereof and the hydriodide of an aliphatic, alicyclic, aralkyl or heterocyclic amine having a vapour pressure less than one atmosphere at 100 DEG C. or a quaternary ammonium iodide derivable from said amine hydriodide. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyoctamethylene adipamide, polydecamethylene sebacamide and poly-S -caprolactam. Specified hydriodides are those of tri-n-butylamine, tri-n-propylamine, b -phenylethylamine, cyclohexylamine, piperidine, benzylamine, triethanolamine and hexamethylene diamine. Specified quaternary ammonium iodides are the tetra-n-propylammonium, tetran - butylammonium, methyl - tri - n - propylammonium and ethyl-tri-n-propylammonium iodide, N-propylpiperidine methiodide, N-methylpiperidine methiodide and trimethylcyclohexylammonium iodide. In the examples:-(1) hexamethylene diammonium adipate is polymerized in the presence of water, copper dust and hexamethylene diamine hydriodide; (2) S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of water, cupric oxide and b -phenylethylamine hydriodide; (3) hexamethylene diammonium adipate is polymerized in the presence of water, acetic acid, cupric oxide and hexamethylene diamine hydriodide and (4) hexamethylene diammonium adipate is polymerized in the presence of water, acetic acid, copper and hexamethylene diamine hydriodide.
