Abstract

925,169. Seaming. FR. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. July 20, 1961 [July 25, 1960], No. 26289/61. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] In a machine for forming, filling and closing containers (see Group XVII) a strip of cardboard lined with a plastics material is folded on a mandrel and sealed longitudinally, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the tube so formed being cut into lengths by blades 31, 32 which travel laterally with the moving tube. The blades 31, 32 are mounted on arms 41, 42, respectively, the arm 42 being mounted on crank arms 33, 34 continuously driven from gear-wheels 38-40. The upper blade 31 is pivotally mounted and actuated by a cam 52 and roller 51 to cut the tube. A roller 43 running on a cam rail 44 keeps the lateral movement of the cutters straight. The coupling between the cranks 33, 34 and arm 42 is flexible, Fig. 7 (not shown). Welding mechanism.-Each tube is opened to a square cross-section before transfer to a mandrel 100 where it receives a bottom cover of thermoplastic material, e.g. polythene. Transfer is effected by grippers on the mandrel, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), actuated through a rod 125, roller 126 and fixed cam ring 124. The mandrels 100 are mounted on a rotating drum 102 and are raised and lowered in a vertical plane by pivoted linkage under control of a roller 107 running in a fixed cam ring 105. In the raised position the container base is heat-sealed by a welding head 150 having a fixed headpiece 151 and heated jaws 152 which are moved diagonally inwards against the container base under control of a cam 163, Fig. 8, and roller 162. The jaws 152 are subject to the action of springs 156 through intermediate pivoted linkage having rollers 158 which bear against a sleeve 159 slidable on a rod 160. If the machine stops, a motor 174 is energized to raise a ring 170 which lifts the roller 162 and thereby removes the jaws 152 from contact with the container. When the welding is completed, the grippers on the mandrel 100 pull the container from the head 150. Compressed air may be blown through the headpiece 151 against the container base in order to aid its separation from the head 150 and for cooling. After the container is filled, a top cover is welded on in a rotating drum machine operated in a similar way, Fig. 19 (not shown), to that employed for welding the base.
