[Also in Group XIV] A checking counter 1 in a self-service store comprises a recess 5 for receiving the baskets containing goods, a conveyer 8 for carrying the goods, when removed from the baskets by the cashier, to a collection area 6 where they are removed by the customers, and a screen 12 disposed alongside and above the conveyer to prevent access of customers' hands to the goods on the conveyer and to form a support for money passing between the customer and cashier. The screen, which is preferably transparent, e.g. of glass, includes vertical plates 12 1 and horizontal plates 12 2 supported by a pillar 13. The cashier operates a cash register 2 while removing goods from a basket placed in the recess 5 on to the conveyer 8 which may be set into motion continuously or at the completion of the operation of the register 2 and a pivoted bar 15 is operated manually or automatically to divert successive customers' goods to different collective bays 14 1 , 14 2 . A cash till comprising a number of coin compartments 20 and note compartments 21, is mounted in a corner of the counter opposite a cashier's seat 10 and the till may be pivotally mounted to permit it to be swung out of sight beneath the counter. A stacking device 24 for the empty baskets may be situated adjacent the cashier's position.
