Abstract

924,833. Etching. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 3, 1961 [Sept. 28, 1960], No. 33310/60. Class 100 (2). A method of etching one face only of polytetrafluorethylene or other strip or sheet material comprises unwinding the material from a roll at a point clear of the etchant with part only of the circumference of the roll in contact with the etchant and with the side edges of the sheet or strip protectively covered throughout the unwinding operation. The etchant is 1-2% metallic sodium dispersed in anhydrous liquid ammonia at - 40‹ C. The edges are protected by covering with a composition comprising a synthetic rubber resin adhesive in a petroleum solvent. The material is cleaned in acetone before being wound into the roll. The etching bath 3 is covered and is supplied through a pipe 3a with nitrogen, since the etchant reacts with air. The roll 1 is tightly wound on a roller 2, and after withdrawal of the strip the protective composition remains on the roller ends. The etched strip is passed through two water baths 13, 14 and a bath 13a of nitric acid to remove deposits of carbon formed during etching, and is then passed between drying pads 16 to a take-up roller 15.
