Abstract

High molecular weight boron hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting acetylene, methyl acetylene or 1, 3-butadiene with a diborane, N-triethylamine borane or a boron compound obtained by reacting sodium borohydride with boron trifluoride-diethyl etherate. The methyl acetylene may be introduced in the form of propargyl chloride. The use of a di- or polyolefine with an addition compound of boron hydride and a tertiary amine is specifically excluded. A solvent which may be tetrahydrofurane, diethyl ether, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, toluene, xylene, benzene or an excess of one of the reagents may be present in the reaction mixture. Temperatures may vary from room temperature up to a temperature below that at which reactants are decomposed. In examples (1) Acetylene is passed through a suspension of sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofurane. Boron trifluoride etherate is added dropwise with stirring and cooling to keep the mixture below 40 DEG C. After standing, product is filtered and solvent distilled off in vacuo. The white wax-like product contains 11,5% boron. (2) Sodium borohydride in diethylether or tetrahydrofurane is reacted with boron fluoride etherate to give diborane which is conveyed by an inert gas (e.g. argon) to a second reaction vessel containing tetrahydrofurane through which acetylene is being passed. The product has a composition [B-C2H3)3]x. Ex. (3) is similar but uses an excess of diborane and produces a polymer containing groups with the formulae [B(C2H3)3] and [B2(C2H4)3]. In Example (4) N-triethylamine borane [(C2H5)3 N:BH3) is reacted with acetylene. Triethylamine and residual amine borane are removed in vacuo, leaving a solid residue which liquefies in air with evolution of heat. It contains 10,1%B. (5) N-triethylamine borane is reacted with propargyl chloride. (6) N-triethylamine borane is reacted in toluene with acetylene under pressure. (7) 2 vols. of diborane are reacted with 3 vols. of butadiene in tetrahydrofurane until reaction is over. The mixture is refluxed and solvent distilled off. A mixture of oily and solid products is obtained. Uses: The products are not spontaneously inflammable. They can be used as high-energy propellants in a solid or pasty state. Specifications 877,936 and 880,212 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 877,936 and 880,212.
