Abstract
923,223. Controlling the water content of gases. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 23, 1961 [March 23, 1960], No. 10380/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). A controlled amount of water is added to a gas by passing the gas through an aqueous solution undergoing electrolysis so as to add hydrogen and oxygen to the gas in the ratio of two volumes of hydrogen to one volume of oxygen, the gas containing hydrogen and oxygen being then thoroughly dried and passed over a heated platinum catalyst to recombine the hydrogen and oxygen to form water. The gas is bubbled so that it passes over the electrodes in the cell in which the electrolysis is being carried out. In an example, carbon dioxide is passed through dilute sulphuric acid undergoing electrolysis and containing hydrogen and oxygen, is dried first over magnesium perchlorate and then over phosphorous pentoxide before being brought into a spiral of platinum wire heated by an electric current to red heat. The water content of the carbon dioxide is controlled by varying the current to the electrolytic cell containing the dilute sulphuric acid.
