Abstract

923,183. Thermionic cathodes. EITELMcCULLOUGH Inc. April 19, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 13666/60. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XI] In an electron tube comprising an indirectlyheated cathode 11, the heating filament 17 is caused to emit electrons and a time decreasing voltage is applied between the filament and cathode to cause time decreasing electron bombardment of the cathode, whereby the cathode is quickly raised to its emissive temperature. The filament may be a helix of thoriated tungsten or tungsten, with a carburized coating, arranged in a cylindrical cathode cup, Fig. 1 (not shown). As shown, a capacitor 23 is connected between filament and cathode, and is charged from a D.C. voltage source through a resistor 24 at a rate which approximates the rate at which the cathode loses heat during a cooling cycle, so that switch 31 may be omitted. Initially, switch 29 is in the position shown so that a relatively high voltage is applied across filament 17 causing electron emission. After 0.25 secs. the filament heating voltage is reduced, by movement of switch 29, to a value sufficient to maintain cathode 11 at its operating temperature, electron emission from the filament gradually ceasing.
