Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble dyes which contain at least one water-solubilising group and attached to a carbon atom of the dye at least one group of formula <FORM:0923068/IV(a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radical, X is a 1:3:5-triazine or pyrimidine ring which is attached to the nitrogen atom N through a carbon atom of the ring and which also carries one or two -S-Z groups wherein Z is an aryl radical containing at least two nitro groups and which may contain other substituents. The dyes are prepared by condensing in either order of succession a water-soluble coloured compound containing at least one -NHR group, a halotriazine or halopyrimidine containing at least two halogen atoms and a compound of formula D-S-Z wherein D is a hydrogen or alkali metal atom. Azo dyes may be prepared by diazotisation and coupling using suitable components. Dyes of the monoazo, metallized monoazo, azostilbene, anthraquinone nitro, and phthalocyanine series are specified.
