Abstract
The invention comprises a compound having the formula: <FORM:0923064/IV(a)/1> wherein Z is b -hydroxymethylene or carbonyl, Y is hydrogen, fluorine, or chlorine and the 1,2-carbon atom linkage is a single or double bond linkage and a process for the preparation thereof by treating the corresponding 21-iodo compound with a reducing agent and if desired oxidising to produce the corresponding 11-keto derivative. The 21-iodo compound is obtained by treating the 21-OH compound with an organic sulphonyl halide to obtain a 21-sulphonate ester which is treated with sodium iodide. Examples describe the preparation of 2a ,16a -dimethyl-11b ,17a - dihydroxy- 4-pregnene- 3,20-dione, 2a ,16a -dimethyl-9a -fluoro- 11b ,17a -dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3, 20-dione and the corresponding 1,4-pregnadienes. Specification 923,063 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound of the formula <FORM:0923064/VI/1> wherein Z is b -hydroxymethylene or carbonyl, Y is hydrogen fluorine, or chlorine, and the 1,2-carbon atom linkage is a single or a double bond linkage and a pharmaceutical diluent. They are employed in ointments, creams, lotions and sprays with or without coacting antibiotics, e.g. penicillins, neomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and novobiocin.
