Abstract
In Example (1) a mixture containing equimolecular quantities of n-butanol, acetonitrile, water and sulphuric acid is heated to 120-125 DEG C. The reaction mixture forms two layers which are separated by decontation. The lower layer consists of melted ammonium bisulphate which is mixed with sulphuric acid to facilitate handling and is then neutralised with ammonia to yield white ammonium sulphate.ALSO:Alkyl acetates are prepared by the alcoholysis of acetonitrile at an elevated temperature in the presence of water, an alkanol and sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid in proportions such that for each mole of acetonitrile there is one mole of water, one mole of alkanol and one mole of anhydrous sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. In comparative experiments the use of reactants in proportions other than those defined above, and the use of phosphoric acid are mentioned. In examples: (1) acetonitrile, n-butyl alcohol, water and 96% sulphuric acid are heated together and the resultant two layers separated. The upper layer is cooled, neutralized, filtered and distilled giving butyl acetate; (2) ethyl acetate is prepared in a similar manner from acetonitrile, water, ethyl alcohol and sulphuric acid.
