Abstract
The invention comprises 2 2-halogen-D 1-androsten-17b -ol-3-ones (including a 1- or 17a -methyl homologue thereof, or a corresponding 19-nor compound of the said D 1-androsten or homologue thereof), and the corresponding 17b -acylates, and the preparation thereof by introducing halogen at the 2-position of the required D 1-androsten-17b -ol-3-one by a method known per se for the introduction of halogen at the 2-position and, when required, acylating the product to form a 17b -acylate. The halogenation at the 2-position may be carried out by adding halogen to the 1,2-double bond and then eliminating the halogen at the 1-position as hydrogen halide from the resulting 1,2-di-halogenoandrostan- 17b -ol-3-one, e.g. by means of pyridine, or by treating a 1,2-oxido-androstan-17b -ol-3-one with a hydrogen halide in chloroform which also eliminates water from the intermediate 1-hydroxy-2-halogenandrostan- 17b -ol- 3-one, or by treating an alcoholysis product of a 1,2-oxido-androstan-17b -ol-3-one (obtainable, for example, by treatment of the oxido compound with alcohol such as methanol, in the presence of perchloric acid) with hydrogen halide in an inert solvent.
