Abstract

922,295. Hot axle-box detectors. SOCIETE ANONYME DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS, and COMPAGNIE DE SIGNAUX ET D'- ENTREPRISES ELECTRIQUES. Jan. 31, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 3724/61. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XX] A stationary hot axlebox detector comprises an indium antimonide cell on to which the radiation from the hot boxes is focused. The radiation beam is modulated by a chopper disc. By means of a calcium fluoride lens 1 and a band-pass filter 2 radiation only of wavelengths 5-9 microns passes to the cell 4, thus reducing the effect of ambient solar radiation on the cell. A perforated disc 3 is rotated at high speed to modulate the radiation beam. The pulses from the cell are of short duration for a fast-moving vehicle so, after amplification, the pulses are elongated in a pulse-stretching unit 7. The signals then pass to a relay 9 which can trigger an alarm, and to a temperature recording device 8. In a second embodiment the cell output is mixed with a high-frequency signal in a ring modulator, the chopper disc 3 being rotated at low speed and the difference frequency signal being eliminated before amplification and utilization.
