Abstract

922,123. - Television. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 27, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 40420/59. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] Adjustment of the brightness control 14 of a television receiver varies the grid potential of the picture tube 3 and also varies by a like amount the bias potential applied via cathodefollower 7 to an unilaterally conducting device 6 which clips the peaks of the video signal supplied to the cathode of tube 3 via the video amplifier 5. With this arrangement, variation of the background brightness caused by rectification of signal peaks at the control grid when grid current flows and damage to the tube by excessive beam current during such signal peaks are prevented by the clipping action of device 6 for all settings of the brightness control. When the latter is adjusted for low background brightness the maximum permissible signal is effective to modulate the beam. The arrangement according to the invention may be advantageously employed to control, respectively, the electron beams for the red and blue components of a three-colour picture reproducing system.
