Abstract

922,000. Making helically seamed tubes. L. KEYNE, and T. LANGEN. July 7, 1961 [July 14, 1960], No. 24704/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A machine for manufacturing pipes of different diameters made from helically wound strip with a closed seam includes a strip feeding device and a plurality of pipe shaping tools 8 mounted in a jaw-portion of a support 1, the feeding device and the support, or a table 2 which forms a part of the latter, being angularly adjustable relatively to one another and the pipe shaping-tools being adapted to bear from the exterior only against the pipe being formed around an arc of at least 120 degrees, and being adjustable radially relatively to the axis of such pipe asymmetrically in the jaw-portion, so as to suit the position of the axis of the pipe being formed, which position is dependent upon the desired diameter of such pipe, the use of an internal mandrel or adjustable internal shaping tools being unnecessary. As shown a pair of tools 8 are mounted on each bridge member 7 which interconnects a pair of externally threaded shafts 6, one being shown and the other being mounted on a second jaw I behind the illustrated one. A sleeve-shaped sliding member 9 is fixed to the inner end of the shaft 6 on the other end of which engages a structure 10 mounted on an outer guide 5 and comprising a worm 11 which engages a gear 12 mounted on the shaft 6. This arrangement allows the tool 8 to be adjusted radially inside an outer guide 5 which is pivotable in passages 3 to allow the tool to be also adjusted angularly. The lower two pair of tools 8 need only be capable of radial adjustment. A wear-resistant strip entrance 13 may replace the lowermost passage 3. Instead of the two-part stand supporting the tools 8, it is possible to use a single stand wherein each passage 3 is in a single section. These sections are positioned side by side so that the passages are staggeredly arranged after each other in the direction of rotation of the strip. In a modification, the tools 8 are mounted in annular or cruciform-shaped grooves in a stand side by side in a staggered arrangement one after the other in the direction of rotation of the strip. A plurality of counter jaws can be used. In another modification the tools 8 are in the form of a plurality of stacked plates which are piled upon each other. These plates are positioned at an angle between 0 and 90 degrees, but preferably 45 degrees, to the table, suitable clamping means being provided. A guide roller for pre-bending the strip may be provided. The pressure heads of the tools may comprise either fixed to rotatable wear resistant bodies such as balls or cylinders. The strip may be hot and cold-rolled steel strip or non- ferrous metals or plastics. The seams of the pipe may be formed by welding or, with the edges preferably overlapping, by means of adhesive. The machine may be used for making conical pipes.
