Abstract

A self-bonding siloxane elastomer is made by condensing a substantially diorganopolysiloxane in the presence of (a) 0,001 to 0,1% (by wt.) of boric acid or an alkyl or phenyl ester thereof and (b) a conventional siloxane condensation or polymerization catalyst, and curing the resulting product in the cold or at an elevated temperature. Prior to curing with known catalysts, the product may be compounded with fillers, e.g. silica (fume, aerogel or xerogel), crushed quartz and diatomaceous earth. The starting siloxanes may be linear or cyclic. In one embodiment (a) and (b) are provided by a potassium borate. In typical examples, (1) a linear dimethylpolysiloxane containing terminal SiOH groups was mixed with boric acid (saturated aqueous solution) and trimeric phosphorus-nitrile chloride (in methylene chloride) and condensed at 120 DEG C. to a highly viscous polymer which was then mixed with fume silica and dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and cured at 250 DEG C. to an elastomer; (3) a linear methylvinylsioloxane copolymer was mixed with boric acid triethyl ester and FeCl3.6H2O and heated at 110 DEG C. to yield a viscous polymer which was then mixed with quartz powder, tetraethylsilicate and dibutyl tin dilaurate and cured at room temperature to give a self-bonding elastomer. Uses: for electrical insulation; for bonding siloxane elastomers, particularly in repairing siloxane insulation on cables; and for lining dentures made of acrylate resins.
