Abstract
921,905. Treatment of growing plants. P. VIDAL. June 9, 1959 [June 10, 1958], No. 19721/59. Class 6(2). [Also in Group XX]. A rotatable rotation source can be raised away from the ground on a vertical support member, so that crops or plants on the ground around the source can be scanned by the circular sweep of the radiation beam; a vertical shaft in the ground is provided so that radiation can be inhibited by lowering the source into the shaft. In the arrangement shown, the source is a framework of steel tubes 14 containing cobalt 60, mounted between annular plates 12, 13, and surmounted by a lead shield plate 9. The frame is rotated by a motor 10, preferably at about 10 r.p.m. The frame is supported within a tower-like structure 1, and can be raised or lowered therein by a cable 8 operated by a motor 6. The movement of the frame is guided by vertical slide-bars which extend the whole height of the tower and into a shaft 2 in the ground vertically beneath the tower. The radiation frame is lowered into this shaft when not required to be operational, the shield plate 9 then acting as a cover for the shaft.
