Abstract

921,725. Transistor comparator circuits. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 4, 1960], No. 34055/60. Class 40 (6). [Also in Group XIX] In a circuit for comparing a known binary number with an unknown binary number (see Group XIX), the comparison circuit stage for each pair of corresponding digits, Fig. 5, comprises a PNP transistor T1 and an NPN transistor T2. The emitters of T1, T2 are held at E 1 (0 volts) or E 0 (-10 volts) according as the unkown digit is " 1 " or " 0," and the collectors are connected to a tapping on a potentiometer chain (not shown) for effecting the comparison of the two numbers. When the known digit is a " 0 ", no current is fed in at P1 and a catching diode D6 holds the bases of T1, T2 at E 1 -E J and E 1 -E J -E Z , respectively, where E z is the drop across an avalanche diode D7. When the known digit is a " 1," current is fed to a resistor R4 and a catching diode D5 holds the bases of T1, T2 at E 1 +E J and E 1 + E J -E z , respectively. The voltage E J is chosen so that T1 conducts only for an unknown " 1 " and a known " 0 " while T2 conducts only for an unknown " 0 " and a known " 1." Fig. 7 shows an alternative comparison stage in which the known digit is set up by adjusting a two-position switch S<SP>1</SP> and the unknown digit is represented by the conducting state of a transistor T<SP>1</SP>. A PNP transistor T4 in parallel constitute a unidirectional conducting device whose direction of conduction is set by the switch S1.
