Abstract

921,142. Dental articulators. A. J. DE PIETRO. Nov. 23, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959], No. 40345/60. Class 81 (2). A dental articulator comprises a lower jaw model support 10 hinged at the rear to an upper jaw model support 30 by a pair of laterally spaced joints each comprising a sphere 16, which is fixed to the lower jaw model support and simulates a natural condyle, and a plate 42 fixed to the upper jaw model support, each plate having a downwardly facing undersurface 54 simulating a condylar path and a vertical abutment 52 which engages the associated sphere on the side facing the other sphere to control relative lateral movement between the jaw model supports. An incisal pin 104 mounted on the front of the upper jaw model support engages a part 116 carried by a base member 108 at the front of the lower jaw model support, incisal pin guide surfaces 136 being provided by a rockable member 128 cradled in the base member. The spheres 16 are mounted on uprights 12 fixed at the rear of the lower jaw model support. Vertically arranged sector-shaped portions 42, each recessed on its undersurface to provide a condylar guide path 54 and a vertical abutment 52, are adjustably carried at each side of the rear of the upper jaw model support for engagement with the spheres. The point of the incisal pin 104 is guided during relative movement of the jaw model supports by leaves 136 pivotal on the rockable member 128. The position of upper and lower jaw models on the jaw model supports is set by pins 38, 24 and adjusting screws 40, 26. In an alternative construction each sectorshaped portion is replaced by two separately adjustable frames (Figs. 10-15, not shown) each carrying a stack of plates which are relatively displaceable so that their narrow edges define a candylar guide and a vertical abutment, respectively. Each of the hinge joints may alternatively include two spheres supported by the lower jaw model support, each sphere engaging stacked plates forming the candylar guide and the vertical abutment respectively.
