The headstocks C, D of a sawmill carriage can be offset relatively to each other in order to accommodate tapered or irregular logs by disengaging clutches A fitted on the common drive shaft F between the headstocks or on the separate shafts H operating screw and nut or rack and pinion traversing means on the headstocks. Limit switches X, Y for the traverse movements of the headstocks on the carriage are provided and when a headstock D reaches the limit of its travel its switch Y is operated to stop the motor E. The other headstock C, which has not been offset, will not have reached the limit of its travel but the clutch A can be disengaged and it operates a cancelling switch Z to re-start the motor and drive the headstock C until its limit switch X is operated.
