Apparatus for removing waste yarn from a bobbin comprises a base 11, a horizontally reciprocable cutter 76 mounted at a first position on the base 11 for making a rough cut through the yarn, a horizontally reciprocable cutter 81 mounted at a second position on the base 11 for cutting any yarn not severed by the cutter 76 and means for moving the cutters simultaneously when the bobbins are positioned thereunder. The cutter 76 comprises a knife blade and is mounted on a block 75 secured to a rod 62. The cutter 81 comprises a disc supported on a spring-loaded shaft 80 extending upwardly through a housing 79 and secured to a yoke 82 having a roller 83 mounted thereon to ride along a rail 84. The housing 79 is secured to a rod 63 coupled to the rod 62 by a bracket 64, the rods 62, 63 being slidable in bearings 55 ... 58. Bobbins 20 having waste yarn 27 thereon are manually loaded on to a shoot 26 and are picked up by notches 22 in a reel 18 secured to a shaft 21. The reel 18 is indexed by the engagement of a roller 37 on a pawl 36, Fig. 3, pivoted to the lever 31, mounted on the shaft 21 and operated by a cylinder 32, with projections 41 on a wheel 30 secured to the shaft 21. A spring- loaded pin 43 engages holes 42 in the wheel 30 to prevent rotation thereof and is releasable by a lever 47. Each bobbin is halted beneath the rod 62 carrying the cutter 76 and a cylinder 68 advances the cutters 76, 81 so that the cutter 76 makes a rough cut through the yarn 27. Near the end of the cutting stroke a bolt 96 pivots the lever 47 to withdraw the pin 43 from the wheel 30 and the bracket 64 raises a switch lever 91 (Fig. 2, not shown) to cause the cylinder 32 to index the reel 18 and carry the bobbin to a position beneath the rod 63 carrying the cutter 81. The bracket 64 closes a switch 99 (not shown) and the cylinder 68 withdraws the rods 62, 63. In the position shown a block on the rod 62 a switch to again advance the rods 62, 63. The roller 83 rides down on to a cam surface 90 of the rail 84 so that the flat surface of the cutter 81 contacts the bobbin 20 and movement of this cutter severs the yarn missed by the cutter 76. Upon further indexing of the reel 18 the stripped bobbin is deposited on a shoot 27.
