Abstract

Polymerizable thermoplastic and thermosetting monomer is moulded with a catalyst &c. by casting between glass, steel or vacuum formed polyethylene dies to a partially polymerized and coherent form and subsequently moulded under pressure between accurately machined dies to final lens dimension and completed polymerization. Methyl methacrylate and alkyl methacrylate monomers in equal parts are mixed with 0,1% dibenzoyl peroxide catalyst, premoulded in an oven for successive periods at 50 DEG C., 60 DEG C., and 70 DEG C. respectively; followed by final pressing under 7 tons for 5 minutes at 200 DEG C. The preform may also be coated with partially polymerized resin or the upper preform surface may be mechanically formed prior to the final moulding.
