Abstract

Optical elements are made by forming a core of a polymerizable p material which is not fully polymerized but which, when fully polymerized, becomes a transparent synthetic resinous material, the material of the core comprising at least one partially polymerized material which, when fully polymerized, is a thermoplastic synthetic resin, applying to the core a coating including a polymerizable material which, when fully polymerized, becomes a transparent, abrasion-resisting, synthetic resinous material, furthering the polymerization of the core and coating simultaneously, and applying to the surface a required form. As material for the core there is specified partially polymerized methyl methacrylate or a partially polymerized mixture of methyl methacrylate with allyl methacrylate or diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate). As material for the coating there is specified an epichlorohydrin solution of partially polymerized allyl methacrylate containing benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst.
