Abstract

920,356. X-ray determination of silver. ILFORD Ltd. Dec. 9, 1960 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 239/60. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XX] The silver content in a layer such as a photographic emulsion is determined by detecting the 0.56Š fluorescence radiation when the layer is subjected to 0.47Š X-rays. X-rays from an American 241 source, 13 are absorbed or converted to X-rays of 0.47Š wavelength according to whether they have more or less than 26 keV of energy by the antimony discs 12, 14. The 0.47Š X-rays are directed by an iron dish 11 on to the layer 18 which travels past on rollers 16. 0.56A X-rays produced by layer 18 are detected by a scintillation counter comprising an aluminium window 3 with a reflective coating on the inside, a sodium iodide crystal 1 a screen 2 of " Pyrex " (Registered Trade Mark) optically coupled to a photomultiplier 4 by silicone oil. The scintillation counter gives pulses with amplitude proportional to the energy of incident quanta, and an amplitude discriminator 9 selects those corresponding to 0.56Š X-rays to be counted by a ratemeter 10. The scintillation counter may be replaced by a proportional counter.
