Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0920267/IV(a)/1> (wherein X is a hydrogen atom or an amino group, Y is a hydrogen atom or a phenyl group substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkyl groups of at most 4 carbon atoms, and Z is a methylidyne or hydroxy-methylidyne group or the group CR3=CR4, wherein R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or hydroxy groups or alkyl groups of at most 4 carbon atoms) but excludes 6-mercapto-purine, 2-amino-6-mercapto-purine and 6-mercapto-8-hydroxy-purine. The above formula represents a number of tautomeric forms, all of which are included in the invention. When Y is a hydrogen atom, the compounds are readily oxidizable to disulphides, and these and the mercapto compounds are readily interconvertible. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a corresponding 4-chloro-pteridine or 6-chloro-purine with a compound containing the anion (S-Y)-. When Z is CR3=CR4 they may also be prepared from a corresponding p 4,5-diamino - 6 - mercapto-pyrimidine and an appropriate a -diketone. Examples describe the preparation of 4 - mercapto - 6,7 - dimethyl-pteridine; 2-amino-4-mercapto-pteridine; 4-mercapto - 7 - hydroxy - pteridine 2-amino-6-mercapto-8-hydroxy-purine; 6-(41-chlorophenyl-mercapto)-purine and 6-(21 and 31 and 41-methylphenylmercapto)-purines.
