A pick-up baler has a framework 21 pivot ally connected to a pair of control arms 30 anc also a pair of hydraulic lift arms 32 extending from a rear implement receiving part of tractor 31 for attaching the baler to the tractor as a mounted implement with the lift arms permitting to lift the baler off the ground 01 bring it into any position for operational use the baler in Fig. 2 comprising a pick-up reel 26 mounted at the side of a compression chamber 22, and feeding material by rotating tines 9( into an auger chamber 91, where a rotating auger 27 concentrates it into the path of feed forks 24, pivotally attached to a fork member 83 for return trailing movement as at 89, (Fig. 6) with the feed forks moving in a quasi-elliptica path 87, imparted by a crank 80 and linkage 81, 82, 84, thereby forcing the material intc the open-ended compression chamber 22, where it is compressed into a bale by an oscillitating ram 25, mounted as a pendulum on a shaft 36, (Fig. 5), with the oscillating move ment imparted by a crank 46 and connecting rod 48 pivotally connected to a gudgeon pin 49 disposed intermediate the shaft and the lower ends of sector-shaped members 34. The ram comprises a leading surface 40 carrying at its leading edge a cutter blade 44 co-operating with a second cutter blade 45, (Fig. 3), disposed on the baling chamber for separation and removal of surplus material and also recesses 41, 42 in which needles 59 are movable in vertical planes and co-operating with a plurality of knotter assemblies 58, Fig. 1 (not shown), disposed on the top of the baling chamber 22 the assemblies and needles being initiated by a known measuring device 62. The thus formed bale is discharged from the side of the baler into a trailer via a baling chamber extension 23. In another embodiment the bales may be discharged at the back of the baler and the pick-up device is mounted in front of the baling chamber. The baler may be provided with a sheet 33 to prevent the baler from becoming " tailheavy " or assist in regulating the height above ground. The ram, augar, feed forks, needles and knotters, which co-operate in timed relationship can be driven mechanically by a cardan shaft 51 powered by the tractor. In a further embodiment one or more baler parts may be actuated by a hydraulic piston and cylinder unit e.g. feed fork and sugar, but separate units may be provided. In the preferred embodiment of a hydraulically operated baler a hydraulic motor in Fig. 10 (not shown) may be provided for driving all the parts, and a mechanical drive from the tractor can be dispensed with. In a still further embodiment (not shown) the drive linkage to the feed fork mechanism may include an overlaid trip device to release the feed forks when their path is obstructed. In still a further embodiment (not shown) the baler may be provided with a pivotally mounted spring loaded shoot adjacent the discharge end of the baling chamber to allow baled material to expand into its tying strings and to guide it on discharge on to the ground. In the final embodiment the pick-up reel may be replaced by a set of fingers pivotally attached to a shaft, the fingers, which are curved upwardly forwardly riding along the ground with their downward movement restricted by a stop bar for the engagement of the rear ends of the fingers behind the shaft.
