A flying shears 1 is accelerated to the speed of the strip &c. 16 to be severed by contact between the end of the strip and an abutment 24 on a rod 12 which is connected by a bellcrank lever 7, 8 to the shears, arm 8 of the lever being connected to the rod 12 and arm 7 carrying a roll 10 which runs on the surface 11 of a fixed guide 6 as the lever turns about its pivot 9 on the shears. Wheels 2-4 may support the shears on a rail 5, and the rod 12 is in two parts 19, 22 connected by a pivot 21, part 22 conveying the abutment 24 and being. guided by rolls 23 and part 19 being connected to the arm 8. A switch 25 operated by the abutment controls a pneumatic device 18 operating the shears.
