Abstract
919,421. Frequency measurement; semiconductor pulse Circuits. B.P.L. (INSTRUMENTS) Ltd. Nov. 18, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1959; May 26, 1959], Nos. 4070/59 and 17923/59. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (6). [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (b)] A rate meter particularly for use in the determination of the shaft speed of an I.C. engine (see Groups XXXVIII, XL (b)) comprises a mono-stable circuit consisting of transistors T1, T2 having collector and base interconnected by a capacitor C1 and resistor R2 respectively characterized in the provision of an R.F. input filter C2L1 to filter out all but the required input pulses. The circuit is triggered at each input pulse derived from the sparking of the engine so that transistor T1 becomes conducting and C1 is charged, thus causing a pulse on the base of transistor T2 to cut the latter off, when the capacitor C1 discharges through resistor R2, thus returning the mono-stable circuit to its original condition. The output from the mono-stable circuit derived across capacitor C3 is rectified and the mean current measured in a meter M, said mean current being proportional to the rate of the input pulses. In order to prevent the mono-stable circuit from being triggered by ignition pulses in the battery circuit, a further filter L2, C4 is included in the circuit.
