Abstract
A film of a linear crystallizable polymer of an a -olefine having at least 3 carbon atoms, having no substantial degree of molecular orientation, is heat set at a temperature below its melting point. Preferably the a -olefin has 3-6 carbon atoms. Polypropylene may be heat-set at 100 DEG -170 DEG C., especially 150 DEG -170 DEG C. The non-oriented film may be made by melt-extrusion and quenching. To reduce haze in the heat-set film, the composition used to make the film may comprise from 0,01-5%, preferably 0,1-1%, of a crystallizable additive having a melting point above that of the polyolefin and a cohesion energy per chain unit not more than 1,000 cals./mole different from that of the olefin polymer. Such crystallizable additives include polyamides, e.g. nylon-11, nylon 6-10 and nylon 6-6, isotactic poly-3-methyl butene-1, and polytetrafluoroethylene. Other additives which may also be present include high melting waxes, slip agents, e.g. oleamide, antistatic agents, e.g. 1-(hydroxyethyl)-2-n-alkyl glyoxalidines, antioxidants, dyes, pigments, lubricants and ultra-violet light stabilizers. The heat-set film may also be coated with a heat-seal coating, preferably after oxidative treatment of the film to improve the bonding properties of its surface, e.g. by corona discharge, ultraviolet, X- or Y-irradiation, flame treatment, or oxidation with nitric or chromic acid. The coatings may be applied as solutions in organic solvents or as aqueous dispersions which are dried at temperatures of 100 DEG -150 DEG C. Specified heat-seal coatings include vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymers which may contain other monomers, e.g. itaconic acid. Slip agents, e.g. calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene or high melting waxes, e.g. hydrogenated castor oil, stearamide, hydroxy-stearamide and ester type waxes may be incorporated into or applied on to the films themselves or into or on to the heat seal coatings. Crystallizabl additives, e.g. the substituted glyoxalidines mentioned above may be incorporated in the coating compositions. Films so treated have a high degree of dimensional stability. Specifications 715,914, 802,975, 822,498 and 903,661 are referred to.
