Abstract

919,114. Door operating appliances. WESTLAND ENGINEERS Ltd. April 4, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 12716/60. Class 65 (1). A rising and overhead stowed door comprises two or more full-width panels 2, 3 positioned one above the other in the closed condition of the door and progressively one in front of another and each lower panel has spigot retention means 15 on the lower edge to engage with spigots 12 on the lower edge of the upper adjacent panel 3 so that when said door is raised to the open condition the upper panels travel with the lower panels until all the panels overlie each other and then move in concert to the horizontal position to the fully-open condition by counterweight mechanism. A counterbalance weight 21 disposed on one side of the door is raised or lowered by a reversible electric motor 27 through cables 22 and drum 25. A manually operable chain 29 and sprocket-wheel 28 are used in event of electrical failure. Cables 30 passing around a cable compensator 35 carried on the weight 21 connect the weight 21 to axles 5 and 6 of rollers 4 running in respective guide channels 7. Rollers 8 on brackets 10 adjacent the upper edge of the lowest panel 2 engage in guide channels 11. As the lower panel is lifted spigots 12, 13 engage in retention means 15, 16 to maintain the overlying panels a constant distance apart in all open positions. In this condition when all the panels overlie each other a striker plate 36 releases latch 38 and catch 37 engages spring-loaded catch 39. Continued operation of the motor 27 causes the guide rollers 4 of the lower overlying panels 2 to leave their guides 7 and after further upward movement rollers 8 leave the channels 11 and the panels will then tilt as one unit in an upward and inward direction pivoting on rollers 4 of the upper panel 3 in their channel 7 and on link arms 17 connected between pivot 20 secured above the door framework and a pivot 18 on an inwardlyextending bracket 19 on the upper panel 3, until both panels are horizontal whereupon switch 40 is operated by bracket 43 on the weight 21 to cut out the motor 27.
