Abstract

Brine containing a low concentration of calcium is prepared from water and sodium chloride containing calcium sulphate as an impurity by adding to either or both of the water and impure solid sodium chloride, 0,3 to 3 grams of an alkali metal carbonate and 0,06 to 1 gram PO4 in the form of alkali metal pyrophosphates, hexametaphosphates, or tripolyphosphates, per kilogram of dissolved sodium chloride. Sodium carbonate is the preferred carbonate. The process may be effected by spraying a concentrated aqueous solution of the carbonate and polyphosphate on to the impure solid sodium chloride, adding dry solid carbonate and polyphosphate to the impure solid sodium chloride, or dissolving the carbonate and polyphosphate in the water used for dissolving the impure sodium chloride.
