Abstract

A filament comprising a melt blend of a first polyamide containing the repeating unit <FORM:0918637/IV(a)/1> or <FORM:0918637/IV(a)/2> where R1 to R15 are hydrogen or alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, D and E are divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or unsubstituted aromatic radicals (provided that when D is a divalent unsubstituted aromatic or cycloaliphatic radical, E is a divalent aliphatic radical, and vice versa), and F is a divalent aliphatic radical, said first polymer having a Tg of not more than 120 DEG C. and a set of at least 1,20%, and a second polyamide containing the recurring unit <FORM:0918637/IV(a)/3> where G and I are divalent aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic radicals (provided that both are not divalent aliphatic radicals), said second polyamide having a Tg of at least 140 DEG C., a set of not more than 1,00% and a melting point of less than 350 DEG C., the proportion of said second polyamide in the blend being from (452A+24S2B-2)% to 80% by weight of the blend where SA and SB are the set values of yarns spun from said first and second polyamides respectively are made by mixing the two polyamides, heating to the melting point of the blend, the heating to a temperature of from 1 DEG C. above the melting point of the blend to 350 DEG C. and holding at that temperature for a period of from 0 DEG to 120 DEG C. ( 1/2 ) <FORM:0918637/IV(a)/4> minutes where T represents the melt temperature, and the blend melt spun into filaments. Tg is the temperature (above 0 DEG C.) at which maximum work loss occurs (the glass transition temperature). A method of determining the set value is given. Many polyamides of both first and second types are specified. The examples describe the blending of and the spinning of filaments from:-(I) to (IV) polyhexamethylene adipamide and polymetaphenylene adipamide; (V) to (VII) polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyhexamethylene isophthalamide; (VIII) and (IX) polyhexamethylene adipamide and a random copolymer of the 2:4- and 4:6-isomers of polydimethylmetaphenylene suberamide; (X) polymetaxylylene adipamide and polymetaphenylene adipamide; (XI) polyhexamethylene sebacamide and polymetaphenylene adipamide; (XII) polyhexamethylene adipamide and polytrimethylene isophthalamide; (XIII) polyhexamethylene adipamide and polymetaphenylene adipamide; (XIV) poly-c -caproamide and polymetaphenylene adipamide and (XV) to (XXI) poly-c -caproamide, polyhexamethylene adipamide or polymetaxylylene adipamide with polyhexamethylene isophthalamide, polytetramethylene isophthalamide, poly(2-methyl hexamethylene terephthamide), polyhexamethylene terephthalamide or copolymers thereof. Specifications 504,714, 639,893 and 793,132 are referred to.
