Abstract

Polypyrrolidone is prepared from pyrrolidone which has been purified by distillation under reduced pressure, e.g. 0,1 to 10 mm. Hg., from phosphorus pentoxide. 0,2 to 20 parts by weight of P2O5 per 100 parts by weight of crude pyrrolidone may be used. The P2O5 may be used in an amount from 1,5 to 10 times the weight of water present in the crude pyrrolidone. The polymerization may be effected by the usual procedures, e.g. by adding sodium to the pyrrolidone and then an activator such as acetylpyrrolidone, or by first forming pure sodium or potassium pyrrolidone and using this as catalyst together with an activator.ALSO:Pyrrolidone is purified by distillation under reduced pressure, e.g. 0.1 to 10 mm. Hg., from phosphorus pentoxide. 0.2 to 20 parts by weight of P2O5 per 100 parts by weight of crude pyrrolidone may be used. The P2O5 may be used in an amount from 1.5 to 10 times the weight of water present in the crude pyrrolidone. Some water may be removed from the crude pyrrolidone before treatment with P2O5.
