917,871. Sorting by gauging. BOHLER & CO. A.G. GEB. July 20, 1959, No. 24844/59. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for measuring the position of core wires of welding rods relative their surrounding coating, and having means for removing those rods having an eccentrically located core wire, includes a conveyer 2 feeding rods 8 from a hopper 1 to a slotted roll 3 whereby the rods are fed singly in spaced relation to a conveyer 6. The rods pass below a shoe 7 which contacts the coating surfaces of the rods so that they rotate during their passage below the shoe. An end of each rod is bared of coating material prior to being fed to the apparatus, and a feeler 9 is located above the path of those bared ends; the arrangement being such that only an eccentrically positioned core wire will contact the feeler. The latter will thus be moved, and a circuit supplying an electromagnet 12 thereby operated to open a flap 13 to allow the deficient rods to pass to a container 14. Sound rods pass to a conveyer 15. As shown in. Fig. 3, the feeler 9 is attached to a lever 10 pivoted at 23 to a plate 18 which rests on the rod. When the lever 10 is raised a contact 11 is closed and the electromagnet operated. Faulty operation which could be caused by curved rods is is obviated by having the plate 18 pivotable so that this plate and its fulcrum is lifted by such rods without closing the circuit to the electromagnet. The shoe 7 incorporates a stamp 16 which marks the rods ; alternatively, the defective rods only may be stamped, in which case they are not removed by the operation of the flap 13.
