Abstract
917,468. Epicyclic gearing; change-speed control. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. Nov. 22, 1961 [Dec. 30, 1960], No. 44790/60. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] Mechanism, for transmitting rotation to or from a drive-shaft in a casing subject to angular movement, comprises an independent shaft coupled to the drive-shaft through epicyclic or differential gearing, one element of which is fixed relative to the casing such that angular movement of the casing relative to the fixed member produces an equal and opposite angular movement of the independent shaft relative to the casing. In a motor vehicle having a changespeed gear 1 in the rear axle pivotable about an axis E, the gear selector shaft 3 which is pivotable about an axis P, and free for axial movement, is connected through a bevel differential 5, 7, 6, to an independent shaft 4 connected at its front end to a gear lever. The casing 10 of the differential, carrying the pinion shaft 9, has a lever 12 connected by a link 14 to a fixed part of the chassis 16 such that rotation of the casing 1 about the axis E produces an equal and opposite rotation of the independent shaft 4 to obviate unwanted rotation in the selector system due to axle movement. Longi. tudinal movement of the shafts 3, 4 is provided by flexible bushings in the linkwork. In a second embodiment, the two shafts are offset and connected by planetary spur gearing, the cage housing the two gears being connected to the fixed member by similar linkwork. A third embodiment also employs spur planetary gearing with the independent shaft connected to the cage member and the planet gear spindle connected to the fixed member.
