Abstract

917,105. Counters. ADAMS Inc. Oct. 27, 1959 [Nov. 3, 1958], No. 36358/59. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group IX] A broken and/or slack ends indicator in a ring spinning or twisting machine comprises a magnetic coil pick-up positioned adjacent each ring traveller path so as to establish a voltage during normal operation of the machine, and a sensing means actuated by lessening or absence of such voltage when the traveller slows or stops. A scanning mechanism electronically linked to a relayoperated signal lamp and counter provides continuous indication and record of traveller conditions for all the spinning &c. stations. Each pick-up, Figs. 2 and 3, which is mounted on the ring- rail, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a permanent magnetic core 16 surrounded by a coil 17 across which an alternating voltage is induced by the periodic passage of the ring traveller B through, and the resultant distortion of, the magnetic field. One end of each coil is earthed, at 6, and leads 18 are each connected to one of spaced contacts 19 of scanning mechanism C, Fig. 4. A constant-speed, motor-driven rotor 20 successively engages contacts 19 to transfer the voltage obtaining thereon, through a slip-ring (not shown) to the grid of amplifier tube 27. Amplified voltage is fed to control grid of tube 29 through a coupling condenser 28, having a filter 28a, and the voltage from plate of tube 29 is fed through coupling condenser 30, having an inductance filter 30a, to the cathode of rectifier tube 31. The negative output voltage from plate of tube 31 is placed on the control grid of a thyratron E serving as a sensitive switch, i.e. firing when the grid voltage falls below a predetermined value and maintaining a maximum output almost instantaneously, to operate a relay coil 33 which, in turn, operates double relay switches 34 and 35 to energize a coil 36 of a counting mechanism and to operate a locking relay 37 for closing contacts 39 and completing the circuit across a signal lamp 38. A reset switch 40 is employed to unlock the holding mechanism actuated by relay 37 by energizing a coil 41 which opens contacts 39. If adjacent ends should fail at the same time, an artificial injection voltage is applied, through sets of electrically connected rings 23 and 24 and a rotor 25 synchronized with rotor 20, to the control grid of tube 27 in order to reset the relay mechanism and thus ensure that each fault is counted.
