Abstract

917,080. Sampling liquids. BIRMING- HAM, LORD MAYOR, ALDERMEN, and CITIZENS OF. Sept. 14, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 31598/60. Class 106 (5). [Also in Group XXVI] A device for sampling sewage at intervals comprises a pump 6 delivering to a receptacle container and control unit 3 and the pump inlet pipe 7 is flexible and thin-walled so that it trails in the sewer stream and waves about to dislodge solid matter that might block its open or perforated end. The pump 6, unit 3 and a battery 5 are adapted to be hooked on the steps 4 of a manhole 1. The pump comprises a thin-walled silicone rubber pipe and a rotatable disc with spaced peripheral projections which in turn move along and constrict the pipe to produce a slow steady movement of liquid along it. During operation of the sampler, the pump motor is continuously driven by the battery 5. Forty-eight bottles 12 are located by shelves 25 and trays 23 and pipes 26 above them lead to bushes 21 arcuately arranged below the end of an arm 14 which carries a pipe 17 either coupled to the pump outlet by a flexible pipe or leading from a cup into which the outlet discharges. The arm 14 is rotated in steps by a motor 28 which is energized by a timing device every fifteen minutes and is stopped by a change-over switch operated by a cam on the reduction gear between the motor and the arm, the hemispherical end of a bush 22 on the arm moving from one bush to the next at each energization of the motor. When the arm is moved beyond the last bush 21 connected to a receptacle, a cam at the arm end of the reduction gear operates a switch to cut off the current to both motors. A dog clutch 27 enables the arm to be pre-set at a required angular position relative to the bushes 21. The receptacle carriers may alternatively be rotatable to put the stationery end of the dis harge pipe in communication with each receptacle in turn. A clock-operated switch brings the sampler into operation at a predetermined time after installation in a manhole and a reversing switch for the pump motor and test switches for the pump and stepping motors are also provided.
