916,176. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 25, 1960 [July 31, 1959; July 14, 1960], Nos. 26457/59 and 24550/60. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel element comprises fuel 13 in a sheath 10, the sheath having at least one minor part, e.g. end caps 16, joined to the main body of the sheath, and is provided with. an insert 24 of nuclear fuel material near the join between the minor part and the main body of the sheath. Fission products from the fuel insert diffuse into the coolant and are detected by the burst cartridge detection apparatus, giving early warning of a small leakage. As shown, the insert of uranium foil is provided in a groove 23 between the inside of the sheath and the end cap. The insert may fill the groove or may be of smaller cross-section; alternatively the insert may be surface roughened, drilled, slotted, or partly cut away in order to provide a volume of free space in the groove. The element comprises uranium in a Magnox sheath and has helical finning 11, splitter fins 12 held by braces 28, alumina insulating discs 17, and thermocouples 30.
